In the post. Dribs and Drabs e-P V, I talked about creating resin disks or orbs from the leftover resin from a project pour. Over the years I have collected many containers of this excess resin with other material enclosed within. The e-P XV vessel is a good example of the use of these resin orbs. A vessel with an interesting shape was used so without modification a cover of fiberglass was the only preparation needed.
The orbs were placed as closely as possible over the entire surface and a thickened resin grout filled open space between pieces. A great deal of sanding and refilling of voids was necessary to get the smooth molded piece shown below. This piece is more of a long term study than the casual glance variety due to the intricacies in each orbs. Sense this is all resin surfaces, a paste wax finish was sufficient. Look at the photo below which limits you to only one side of the piece. I find different color schemes and patterns occur throughout the surfaces of the piece.
Some years ago I made my first vessel with orbs in the surface finish. That was before the e-P series had been created. I used a foam core and when the surface had been firmed up with a fiberglass shell and decorative pieces attached and grouted in, the core was removed. That was typical procedure for my vessels of that time. A photo of that piece is shown below. It has been sold.
