My wife JoAnn, ventured into a controversial theme with one of her resin and bronze pieces that was given meaning she had not anticipated. I mention this now that I shared a similar experience as mentioned in a previous post, "The Family". JoAnn was an art student at Eastern Washington University when she created this piece. The bronze portion was cast to represent the birth cavity and channel. The resin stone has an embryo shape cast inside that looked quite realistic. The piece was part of a student show in the University gallery. It didn't take long for the critical comments to start. Some felt it was making a pro abortion statement while others saw it as pushing the right to life agenda. The most extreme statement was accusing JoAnn of using a real fetus. One teacher with a class of grade school students canceled the art tour and took the students back to their school when she saw the piece. I guess the piece was successful in stimulating thought. JoAnn was overwhelmed by this reaction to her art piece which she had planned to celebrate the marvelous creation of life.
